Heavy Duty Locks

Heavy Duty Locks

Heavy Duty Locks – Millennium Locksmith

Your home or business and its property is only as safe as the lock that is protecting it. What are heavy duty locks, and why would anyone consider having them installed on a place of residence or on a commercial property?

Heavy duty locks provide you with comfort and protection, providing you with the level of security you need. Common locks that go on doors to residential property, and more secure locks intended for commercial properties usually provide you with the sense of security you need for keeping out unwanted burglars or people you do not want to have access to your belongings. However, sometimes a step up in security is needed, and that’s when heavy duty locks come into play.

Residential or Commercial Security

Most home owners want their belongings inside their house and their property protected and secure. Most business owners require a higher level of protection for, not only the items that keep their company running but also to ensure the safety of their workers. Both scenarios have a use for heavy duty locks.

Basically, heavy duty locks provide stronger grade steel and higher levels of protection from break-ins. Some are designed to make forcing or jarring the lock loose nearly impossible while others are padlocks or master locks with durable components.

Sometimes, the property that you want to keep under lock and key is portable, like a bicycle. In these cases, you want to make sure the locks that are securing your item are durable and not easy to tamper with or break to open and steal your property. Other times, you may be looking for a heavy duty padlock to secure a shed or storage unit.

Heavy duty deadbolt locking systems come with longer and thicker throws, bolts for added security when set into place within the door frame. They also sometimes have strong backset latches, and anti-pry collars or a free-turning outer ring to resist wrenching attacks. Some have a solid brass design and a steel shroud over locking bolt. All heavy duty deadbolts are typically Grade 1, 2 or 3 certified.

Master Lock is a leader in the locking industry for providing portable security products, which in many cases means a secure padlock, not one that is easily cut off or has an easy-to-maneuver combination. Instead, these heavy duty locks provide features such as digital, electronic, or keys to open the lock.

Heavy Duty Locks

Resistant Locks

These are sometimes referred to as commercial grade. The pick-resistant design sets itself above the basic locks by incorporating features which would prevent an average attacker from easily opening the lock and resist bumping and shimming.

High Security Locks

Go even farther in securing your place with a heavy duty lock that provides you with high security. These locks employ mechanisms that completely block and render nearly useless most typical lockpicks. An attacker with anything less than stellar skill would be unable to break into a high security lock in less than half an hour. Even a skilled attacker would need specialized tools and techniques to compromise a heavy duty, high security lock.

Contact a local professional locksmith to discuss your security needs and whether or not heavy duty locks are right for your home or business needs.

Lockout

How To Prevent A Lockout

How To Prevent A Lockout

Preventing a lockout from happening in the first place is the best solution to avoiding an inconvenient and unsafe lockout scenario. Take preventative measures like these helpful tips:

Trust a Friend

Trust a friend or relative with a spare key. Just make sure that the friend or relative is willing to come to you in your time of need.

Loud Keys

Noise triggers reactions. Attach a noisy accessory to your key chain. If you drop your keys, they will make a loud sound that can’t be missed.

Not a Tether

Never hand your keys to your baby to use as a teething ring or toy, especially not if they are on an electronic key fob. The slobber can get inside the electronics and cause them to malfunction. Even if the keys never go into the child’s mouth, they can be easily dropped and lost in the hands of an infant.

Never Can Be Too Sure

Don’t become overly obsessed with the fear of losing your keys, but make it a habit to check and double check for your keys before you leave your home or workplace and before you shut that car door to lock. If necessary, set a reminder on your phone or place a checklist next to your doors that remind you to be sure your keys are in your hands before locking doors.

Bags or Clothing

Keep a spare set of keys for your home, office, and car inside a bag, a brief case, or an item of clothing that you wear every day. If you are a student and have a book bag, put a spare key inside. Or if you carry a computer bag or brief case to work, tuck a spare key in one of its pouches. Or if you carry a purse, place a spare key inside a small zippered compartment, so it is there when you need it.

Jewelry or Hooks

Carry your keys on a lanyard around your neck or on a hook that attaches to your belt loop. This method used to be a common method used for children who needed to let themselves into their home after school but before mom and dad got home from work, and keys were safely tucked on necklaces worn under clothing so as not to make it obvious that the child would be home alone during after school hours. The method of keeping a spare key as part of your jewelry or latched to your clothing doesn’t have to end with a method used for children. Regardless of the age of the person, knowing that a spare key is accessible and attached to your clothing or on a chain around your ankle, wrist, or neckline is reassuring.

GPS

Use a GPS tracking device to attach to your key chain, so you can locate your keys if they become lost.

Go Keyless

Consider setting up keyless entries for your home and car. If you own a business or commercial property, have keyless entries or electronic access card systems in place for your employees. Some personal keyless systems can be operated directly from your cell phone. Both personal or business keyless entries are able to be programmed and reprogrammed as needed without needing to get a key cut.

Cover Your Tracks

Keep a spare house or office key in your glove box of your car, and keep a spare car key inside your house, at your desk at work, or in your wallet. Don’t make so many duplicate copies that you lose control of who has access to your keys, but have at the very minimum one extra set that are for no other purpose but to tuck away in a safe place in case of a lockout emergency.

Smart Hiding Place for House Keys

Scottsdale Lockout ServiceChoose a place to hide your duplicate key that is not the first place a thief will be likely to look. Select a hiding place for your spare key that is not screaming, “something precious is hidden here”. Never leave a key hidden under a door mat. This is too obvious and allows a too-easy access option for burglars. And, never use those garden rocks that are meant to look like real landscape rocks with a hidden compartment. Thieves who break into houses are not that naive as to not notice these obvious hidden keys. It only makes it that much easier for them to gain access to your house.

Hidden Car Keys

A spare car key can be hidden inside a magnetic key storage box that is placed out of view underneath the vehicle. Though, sometimes easily found, these do often provide a great way to store a duplicate key in case of a car lockout. Another option is to store a spare car key inside your wallet, wear it as part of your jewelry, or leave a duplicate copy with a friend. Of course, the electronic keys prove to be more tricky when finding hiding spots like these.

Key and Lock Maintenance

Not every lockout occurs because of a lost key. Sometimes, a key breaks off inside an ignition or door knob, or the lock itself wears out. In fact, approximately one third of all lockouts are because of a damaged lock or key. Avoid these situations the best you can by making sure you provide proper maintenance to your locks. This involves frequent lubrication and cleaning your locks on a regular basis. Replace damaged or malfunctioning keys as soon as you realize they are in bad shape.

Key Checkup

Knowing that you have a spare key tucked away is only reassuring if that key actually works in an emergency. Of course, a traditional cut key will work as long as the lock itself is not broken, but electronic key fobs require working batteries and connections to get the job done. Regularly check to make sure your spare electronic keys or key fobs are working properly.

Locksmith

It never hurts to be completely prepared for any situation, and calling a locksmith doesn’t necessarily have to be your last option. To make sure you are never stranded in an emergency lockout situation, keep the contact information of a locksmith on hand:

Expert Lock Maintenance Tips From Locksmiths

Expert Lock Maintenance Tips From Millennium Locksmith

In order for your locks to function at their maximum potential, they have to be properly taken care of and undergo regular maintenance. This is one simple thing that many homeowners tend to overlook, which is not an indictment of their character or the nature of their responsibility, it is simply the way things are. That is why your trusted locksmiths are here to give you their expert tips and advice on how to properly maintain your locks.

Some people might ask, why is it even important to maintain your locks? It is important to realize that your locks are an integral part of your home security. If your locks are not as strong as they should be, due to poor maintenance, then the security of your home will bear the consequences. In addition to this, homeowners will find themselves changing locks more times than they should. Locks that are old and not properly cared for are easily bypassed and they will also not operate the way that they were intended. Without further ado, here are some of the expert lock maintenance tips that will come in handy for you and your home.

Locks

Regularly Lubricate Your Lock

Lubricating your lock is an important maintenance tip that should be carried out annually. This practice will help increase the lifespan of your lock and ensure that it continues to work as intended. There are many locksmiths who suggest the use of WD-40 as a good lubricant, but sometimes it is better to use Tri-Flow. This lubricant uses less harmful chemicals that are not as harsh on the locking mechanism. Lubricating the lock on a regular basis will prevent the lock from sticking and it will also slow the process of rusting.

Homeowners should strive to lubricate their locks every few months, but if they cannot adhere to this, they should lubricate the lock as soon as it starts to become hard to use. One clear sign that the door lock has become hard to use starts when the lock begins to stick and when it no longer moves in a fluid motion.

Craft Spare Keys

Another expert tip that many homeowners overlook involves crafting a spare key for your locks. Aside from the fact that this is a good thing for homeowners to do anyway, it also helps increase the lifespan of your lock. Locks and keys are used on such a regular basis that people tend to overlook the fact that they go hand in hand. Properly maintaining your lock helps your key work well, and vice versa. In most cases, a key will begin to wear out far before a lock even shows minor signs of decreased functionality. Crafting a spare key allows you to switch out your keys as soon as one begins to wear down, which will help you keep your lock properly maintained.

I’m sure there are people wondering how having a spare key even helps maintain your lock. When a key is inserted into a lock, it works in conjunction with the components of the lock to either lock or open the device. Each of these components (key and lock) have to be functioning properly in order for these actions to occur fluidly. Since keys tend to deteriorate faster than locks, the key will potentially malfunction and scratch against the lock with its continued use, which will then compromise the integrity of the lock.

Gently Clean Your Locks

Cleaning is a staple of properly maintaining anything, and the same concept applies to cleaning locks. Cleaning your locks will ensure that they stay strong and last longer. Locks are not only made up of the locking mechanism, because the casing that houses the lock mechanism is also part of the lock itself. If the exterior of the lock deteriorates while the interior remains in pristine condition, the lock will still eventually have to be replaced. In this instance, both sides of the metaphorical coin need to be polished.

The process of cleaning your locks exterior will ensure that it remains safe from constantly being exposed to natural elements including dirt, dust, and grime. In addition to this, the act of cleaning your locks on a regular basis will also give you the opportunity to inspect them and make sure that everything is copacetic.

Once you set out to clean your locks, always be mindful of the materials, chemicals and method that you use to do this. It is important to make sure that you do not use cleaning products that are abrasive or moderately high in acidity. The best option is to use a damp rag and a gentle detergent, which will not cause any harm to your lock.

Make Sure Deadbolt Is Working Properly

This might sound redundant to some, but don’t get ahead of yourself. One of the key steps to maintenance is to make sure that all the components of the lock are working as they should. More specifically, it is important to make sure that your deadbolts and your latch are working properly.

It is important that the deadbolt and the latch are working as intended because if they are not, it can result in the lock being damaged as well as the door. This damage will leave any homeowner with a hefty bill. The deadbolt or latch should have enough space to extend and retract fully, and it should be securely set within the door when locked. Issues with the deadbolt and the latch have been known to escalate and damage locks so it is necessary to tackle this head on before it spreads.

Clear Out Your Strike

Clearing out your strike plate is key to making sure that your locks are properly maintained. The strike can be easily clogged up with dirt, debris, and, in most high schools, gum. There have been cases where locks have been damaged by something as simple as a clogged strike, so it is important to make sure it is kept clear.

Conclusion

There is no magic art to properly maintaining your locks, it simply boils down to having the patience to check your locks and knowing what to look out for. It is a trait that homeowners should adopt because it not only saves them money over time, but it also helps increase home security. Locks are important, but many people tend to forget just how crucial they are to home security. Hopefully, these expert maintenance tips outlined above will give you some semblance of how to get the best out of your locks, while simultaneously setting them up to last.

Garage Door Repair Scottsdale

Garage Door

Scottsdale AZ Garage Door Service – Lockout, Repair and Replace

You’re told to secure your garage doors to prevent break-ins, so you did. Now, you are the one sitting on the other side in a garage door lockout situation. You’re sitting in the driveway inside of your vehicle that you want to park safely and securely inside the garage, or maybe it’s your child who enters through the garage after school and has forgotten the code, the code failed to work, or he or she is somehow otherwise locked out of the garage. What should you do to open the garage?

First, it’s important to understand the security steps that you appropriately took that got you into this situation. Though, don’t despair about taking these steps, because they have probably kept actual burglars out.

Garage doors are a weak point in home security and quite often an easy target for crooks. Once a would-be criminal gains access to your garage, they provide a shelter to allow them to gain access to the rest of your household valuables. Commonly, criminals use what is called a bypass technique to get inside of a locked garage door.

Garage Door Security

Garage Door Opener – Automatic garage door openers once all had the same code. Today’s openers are usually on a rolling code technology. This means that your remote transmits a brand new security code each time you press the remote. Because there are more than 100 billion codes, making it almost impossible to crack it.

Garage Door Locks – An additional measure of security is to secure the garage doors emergency release, put a deadbolt on the door between the house and the garage, and make sure the door from your garage into your house is as secure as your front door. Padlock the throw latch on the garage door when you are out of town and remove batteries from any external keypads.

You’ve taken all of the necessary precautions, and now you are the one locked out of your own garage. If you have access to the house, you would have already come in through the front door and opened the garage. So, chances are, if you’re locked out of your garage, you are also probably locked out of your entire house. If that’s the case, your first course of action needs to be to gain entrance to your house.

Unless the garage opens with a special digital keyless code, once you have access to the inside of the garage, you will be able to disengage the safety release to bypass the garage door opener and open it manually.

Master Key System

Master Key

Master Key System

If you’ve ever watched a landlord, building owner, housekeeper, or a janitor open up a door with one master key, perhaps you were left with many questions. How can one key open up every door, but when you use the key meant for just that door on another door, it won’t let you in. The answer is in how a master key system works.

Large companies want a way to restrict access based upon an individual’s responsibility or standing within the company. A Master Key system allows different levels of restricted entry. Some create a graduated access level. A Master Key system allows two or more keys to open one lock, but only when the locks and the keys are the same model and set up to do so.

Master Key System

Some terms you need to understand when learning about Master Key Systems include:

  • Springs
  • driver pins
  • shear line
  • master wafers
  • lock pins

Most Master Key systems work off of a basic pin tumbler lock. To open this kind of lock, a pin stack that consists of a driver pin and a key pin must be elevated so that the two rest on opposite sides of the shear line. The key lifts the key pins within a lock. These key pins are all different sizes while the driver pins are a universal size. So, to open a lock, the key needs to have the right set of grooves to lift the key pins to the correct height.

With the basic lock/key system understood, all that is needed for any standard pin tumbler to be turned into a Master Key system is to add what is called a master wafer, sometimes referred to as a master pin, between a driver and key pin. This master wafer is shaped like a small disc-shaped pin. Once it’s in place the pin stack will have two shear lines – one shear line for a pin stack with a master wafer above or below the line. The larger the distance between the Master and the Change key, the more master wafers will be needed. For each additional master wafer, an extra shear line is needed in the chamber.

Master Key System

Master Key System

Master Key systems have several options, but most include one master key and what is called change keys. There may also be a Grand Master Key and a Great Grand Master Key involved. In order from least amount to greatest amount of entry, the keys are explained like this:

  • Change Key – Sometimes this key is called a sub-master key. It is able to open only one lock. However, a change key lock can also be opened with a Master Key.
  • Master Key – Locksmiths often refer to this as an “MK”. This key will open all of the change key locks that are set up within the Master Key locking system.
  • Great Master Key – Locksmiths sometimes refer to this as an “GMK”. Sometimes the Master Key system doesn’t stop with one Master Key, but also has a Grand Master Key that is able to access multiple Master Key systems that are under it as well as all of the change keys within the Master Key system.
  • Great Grand Master Key – This one is top of the Master Key system. It will open all of the grand master key systems under it.

Car Lockout Service

Car Lockout Service

Car Lockout Scottsdale – FAST 24/7 Service

Being locked out of your car can be frustrating, but an experienced locksmith can unlock your door quickly without compromising your locks or damaging your door. It’s never a good idea to try and unlock your car door with standard tools in your toolbox because doing so can damage the door or lock and be very costly to repair. You need to call a professional car lockout service in Scottsdale AZ to unlock that door using specialized equipment and tools. In most cases, this only takes a couple of minutes.

Here are some ways to prevent car lockout:

Check for Your Keys Before You Get Out of the Car

This seems like an obvious preventive measure but needs to become a habit to prevent a car lockout situation. Get into a routine of checking where your keys are before you open your car door or exit the vehicle. Make sure you have all keys in your hand before you exit. Avoid setting your keys down on the passenger’s seat, on the dash, or anywhere else in the vehicle where you might forget about them.

Keep a Spare Key in a Safe Place

Consider having an extra key made and store it in your handbag, wallet, or somewhere in your home. Don’t put an extra key in your glove compartment, under the seat, or anywhere else inside the car as this will also be inaccessible when you lock your keys in your car. You could also give the spare key to someone you trust for safekeeping.

Don’t Carry Keys in Your Jacket or Cardigan Pocket

Many people make the mistake of storing their keys in the pocket of a blazer, jacket, or cardigan. However, these articles of clothing are often left in the passenger seat or hung up on a seat when driving and can end up getting locked inside the vehicle.

Carry Keys on a Weighted Key-chain

Carrying your car keys on a weighted key chain or lanyard that you can wear around your neck or wrist can reduce the risk of losing your keys. The weight of the key-chain will remind you that the keys are safe inside a purse or other bag you are carrying. Lanyards keep the keys close to you at all times.
